The Joomla development community has announced end-of-life for the Joomla CMS version 2.5 software for December 31, 2014. This is a normal and necessary progression for the Joomla CMS software. Joomla’s version 2.5 is superseded by Joomla’s version 3.3 CMS software.
What Does “End Of Life” Mean
Simply put, Joomla will no longer be issuing support updates for the 2.5 version of their software.
As time goes on, certain new features are added to the Joomla software. These ‘feature updates’ provide fixes and enhancements that make the software better. Probably more importantly, as vulnerabilities to hacking are discovered in the software, new “security patch” updates are issued to keep your site safe from attack. Joomla version 2.5 is currently on its 27th ‘patch’ release – or version 2.5.27. On January 1, 2015, the Joomla organization will stop issuing new feature or security updates for Joomla version 2.5.
The issue facing site owners operating a Joomla 2.5 version site is this: the site may continue to work for some time, but new security vulnerabilities will be found, and the Joomla organization will no longer be issuing patch updates to protect against such vulnerabilities. Over time, a Joomla 2.5 website will become more and more vulnerable to being compromised and therefore be a likely target for hackers.
What Are The Options Facing Joomla v2.5 Site Owners?
Depending on the age, size, and frequency of updates to your site, SnowTech Media may take one of several actions for managing your website. Here is a list of the likely options:
- Upgrade the Joomla CMS from version 2.5.x to Joomla 3.3.x. ( “end-of-life” for Joomla version 3.3 will not be announced sooner than September 2016)
- Crossgrade to another CMS (SnowTech Media will help you to evaluate if there is an advantage to crossgrading)
- Don’t Upgrade / Delay Upgrade – which could be necessary in some configurations and situations
The upgrade from Joomla 2.5.x to 3.3.x is a major one. This can be relatively expensive. The good news is that Joomla has been moving to a more automated update system over the past several months. It is anticipated that this will be the last ‘painful’ upgrade, and that future Joomla upgrades will be less complex and costly.
